Trust Part 2

This is Part 2 to yesterday’s post on Trust.

The other day, I learned a very valuable lesson from a 1 year old.  Chances are she has no idea she taught me such profound beauty, but I am eternally grateful to her for her innocence and trust.

You see, the Bible tells us we must follow Christ with the heart of a child.  Sure, I get it.  But what does this actually mean to me?  How do I internalize so that I can externalize?

Phoebe, the sweet 1 year old I babysit, is still learning how to walk.  She has no problem taking step by step as long as you hold her hand and walk with her.  At times, she stumbles, but she gets back up, reaches for my hand, and keeps fearlessly pushing onward.

Somehow our normal walk from room to room sparked a conversation with God.  Now his “like a child” metaphor makes perfect sense.  God literally walks hand-in-hand with us.  He leads us.  Of course we will fall, but if we look for His helping hand, He will lift us up, and continue to lead us on our way.

When Phoebe tries to walk by herself, her eyes weld with tears and anxiety.  She can’t stand the thought of taking a step without me.  But when I grab her hand, she is fearless.

We can view our relationship with God from the same perspective.  Walking this earth alone is treacherous, nerve-wracking, and misguided.  But with God by our side, all of that pain and fear is erased.

In the same way a baby trusts that Mommy (or babysitter, in my case) will keep her safe from harm, we, too, must trust that our Father in Heaven will protect us and guide us, every step of the way.

After coming to this understanding, I can really see that those crazy curveballs are just invitations to ask God to assume the leading batter position.  He can do the hitting, and I can run the sidelines.  I think this is totally fair, don’t you?  I mean, God can handle even the toughest pitches.  He’ll knock them right out of the park, hitting home-runs every time we hand Him the bat.  With a home run and the bases loaded with opportunities, just think how AWESOME that victory lap will be.

Peace,

Bryana
