Step aside, Marilyn Monroe, I’m claiming a new train of thought that is far more dependable than any gift a man will ever give a woman.
If a girl can’t get her diamonds, there’s a rare gem in her life that she can always depend upon…
her Mama!
I don’t tell my Mama thank you enough for being not only my best friend, but also my number one fan, my confidant, my coworker, my role model… well, to put it briefly, my everything. Nothing’s better than having a strong, confident woman who stands behind you every step of the way, who’s ready to catch you when you fall, and push you just enough so that you can make that leap from one mountain ledge to the next. Who better than a woman who has been through it all? Seriously, what haven’t moms experienced? Childhood? Check. Becoming an adult? Check. Childbirth? Check. Raising children? Check. Career Driven? Check. (Being a Stay-at-Home is practically a full-time, unpaid internship – it qualifies as a career!) Mothers are so accomplished in their own little ways that actually aren’t little at all. In fact, my mom is one of the most insightful people I have ever met, and I am in graduate school for psychology! What I pay to do, learn how to think, my Mama does on her own accord. And when times get tough, isn’t it just like Mama to have all the answers? Mamas truly do know best, and when they offer up an inch of wisdom, it’s our offspring duty to take a mile and apply it for life.
Take, for instance, my dating life. Now, fortunately, I have an amazing mom who basically loves whomever I tell her to love. But as I get older, and the “search” is in full swing, Mama’s eyes are a bit more cautious. Mama’s lips stay zipped, because an experience earned, even when burned, is an experience learned. Even so, today Mama revealed she smelled something fishy – and it certainly wasn’t the delicious halibut I had for dinner last night. No, she sensed a recurring trend in my dating life market. She begged me to sell the stock that recently took a painful hit, and is now plummeting into a disastrous pitfall. This stock and I have a history: I have bought and sold it a few times over the past year. Each re-purchase I was convinced the value would increase. Sadly, however, it did not, and I continued to lose, day after day. Mama’s intervention was surely a saving grace. My Mama knows how to pick a great bargain, and this stock was coming at much too high a cost without any significant payout. Mama knows: invest in something small yet promising, and it will grow if it is God’s will. Try to make something already promising grow against God’s will, and Mama knows: sell now.
So thank you, Mama, for giving me the edge I need to do something I should have done a long time ago.
And thank you Mamas across the world for continuing to inspire little kids to dream and big kids to act on those dreams. Mamas make the world a better, happier place – and we don’t need a yearly holiday to celebrate their awesomeness! We can do it everyday by sharing a little extra love to the one who deserves more recognition than a rock found in some cave.
A Mama shows us true love is possible. A Mama is a Girl’s Best Friend.
Love you, MSB…more.
